The Champs - Train To Nowhere b/w Tequila, 1958, Challenge Records, Golden West Melodies, Inc., Jat Music Co.
I really don’t need to explain Tequila, we all know it and love it! The grumble of that sax sends chills throughout my being, as I’m sure it does yours! I will, however, tell the story of how this orginal pressing came into my possession. It was Sunday (my favorite day to dig), I was hungover, and old man Howard noticed this. He said to me: “Look what I just got in, it’s perfect for ya!” He then slapped on Tequila, and we had a good laugh!
Now, the condition of this 45 is busted, however there’s no pops or scratches. This is why Howard jokingly wrote “looks like crap, plays very well.” He marked the price to be $6 because the book on this piece is $12-25. But, since we had a good conversation, and he was in a jovial mood that day, he gave it to me for a buck! Thanks Howard!
Oh right! Howard is this old collector, and one of my favorite human beings, who always boasts that he has over 40,000 records in his archives. He DJs an after hour show appropriately called “Reach Out Of The Darkness,” named after the one-hit wonder band Friend And Lover. I usually don’t divulge my digging grounds, but, if you’re in Houston, you can find good ol’ Howard at Traders Village.
