Melanie - Brand New Key b/w Some Say (I Got Devil), Gather Me, 1971, Neighborhood Records
I thoroughly enjoy this song. So much so that I buy every copy I find (so far I’ve dug up four). It’s such a fun song! The play between the piano, the guitar, the bass, the accordion and the choir is charmingly lighthearted. Plus, Melanie’s voice is the sweetest!
What I’m really stoked about is that the label reads Mono, but this copy was mixed in Stereo! Which means that every instrument is panned out to give a greater depth of field, so to speak. Whereas Mono, everything sounds like it’s in the center. This is the only copy out of the four that has this delightful discrepancy!
