Styx - Renegade b/w Sing For The Day, Pieces Of Eight, 1978, A&M Records, Inc., Almo Music Corp., Stygian Songs
I first heard this track on Chris Cole’s Dying To Live part. Blew my mind. Not only because of how gnarly Chris’ part was, more importantly because this song is bloody amazing! Tommy Shaw’s story of this “Renegade” is one for the ages. It’s a tale retold.
To find this 45 in near pristine condition in a dusty bin is equally amazing. Look at that label! Green and orange. Bow-tied lady finger. Forget Me Nots.
Incredible.

Sam The Sham And The Pharaohs - Wooly Bully b/w Li’l Red Riding Hood, 1965, Polydor Records, Band Of Gold Series
Watch it now, here it comes!!! An all time favorite, “Wooly Bully” is a song that was initially a tribute to the “Hully Gully” dance. However, due to fear of legality (another song with similar title), Domingo “Sam The Sham” Samudio rewrote the lyrics, changing the name to “Wooly Bully.” Sam says, “The name of my cat was ‘Wooly Bully’, so I started from there.“
Basically, “Wooly Bully” is a song about two people, Matty and Hatty, talking about how they want to learn how to dance. Somehow a bull or bison (or a cat for this matter), who apparently is very wooly, is involved.
Uno, dos, one, two, tres, quatro
Matty told Hatty about a thing she saw Had two big horns and a wooly jawWooly bully, wooly bullyWooly bully, wooly bully, wooly bully
Hatty told Matty, Let’s don’t take no chanceLet’s not be L7, come and learn to danceWooly bully, wooly bully Wooly bully, wooly bully, wooly bully
Matty told Hatty, That’s the thing to do Get you someone really to pull the wool with you Wooly bully, wooly bully Wooly bully, wooly bully, wooly bully
Interesting facts:
1) This recording was the first take of three.
2) The ‘Tex-Mex’ count down, and most of the lyrics (Here it come! Watch it! He get ya!), are Sam The Sham riffing.
3) “Wooly Bully” was the first American record to sell a million copies during the “British Invasion.”

Bubble Puppy - Hot Smoke And Sassafrass a/w The Music Machine - Talk Talk, 1985 (Repress), Original Sound Records
The b-side to “Talk Talk.” A nice rocker straight from San Antone! ”Hot Smoke And Sassafrass” was a hit single released in 1969 by the band Bubble Puppy. The track is driven by dual lead guitars, which was unexpected in psychedelic music. It appeared on their debut, and only album - A Gathering Of Promises. Apparently, the track name came from a misheard excerpt from the Beverly Hillbillies!
More interestingly, the band name came from the game “Centrifugal Bumble-Puppy” depicted in Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World.

Blue Cheer - Summertime Blues b/w Out Of Focus, Vincebus Eruptum, 1968, Philips Records, American Music Inc., Blue Cheer Music
Blue Cheer, aptly named after the lysergic acid diethylamide of the time, are credited with being pioneers of Heavy Metal. Their cover of Eddie Cochran’s ”Summertime Blues” is considered to be the first of the genre.
The track is very heavy, with a hint of blues.

Eric Burdon And The Animals - San Franciscan Nights b/w Good Times, Winds Of Change, 1967, MGM Records, Sealark Enterprises And Slamina Music
“Good Times” is the story of my young, dumb, righteous adult life. (I’m sure it’s the story of most peoples lives growing up). Fortunate or not, I’ve relinquished many great opportunities while pursuing others. I’ve since learned that as blessed as any outcome may be, consequently there’s always a loss - the dreaded “catch-22.” That’s the sacrifice though, right?! Weigh out your options, then go with the one that’s most comfortable for your lifestyle at the moment - or at least the one that you think would benefit you the most.
Burdon sums it up best while The Animals back him:
“When I think of all the good times that I’ve wasted having good times.”

This is my theme song from June to October! I hear it in my head when I’m struttin’ my stuff. So if you see me with my chin in the air and a smug look on my face - don’t get mad. Get this song in your head and get like me. Better yet, get like Mungo Jerry.
Mungo Jerry says:
If her daddy’s rich, take her out for a meal.If her daddy’s poor, just do what you feel.
Their philosophy is:
Life’s for living!
